Interview: Introducing Romaan

Romaan began his love for music in his early teens with a passion for Techno, Deep House and Tech House music; he then began learning production and went on to express his love for music as a DJ. Romaan’s music has seen him gain over 50,000 plays with tracks such as ‘Groovin’’, ‘Sumbatra’, and ‘Snub’. Romaan has played in some of the most prestigious places in London and France; we caught up with Romaan to discuss his career.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Romain Deborde, I’m from France (Grenoble) and I’ve lived in London since October 2017. I’m 32 and I started DJ’ing back in 2005.

How did you get into music?

I love the power and emotion that you can find in a music’s movie. I first started music by producing to express myself, inspired by all the ones that I’ve heard and seen (favourite one of all time is Braveheart). Then I started to go out to clubs and this is where my love for electronic music started.

What is your all-time favourite song?

Impossible! Music is way too beautiful to choose only one song.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

I’ve been inspired and I will always be inspired by a lot of different people from the opposite world. That’s what pushes me to create my own style.

If you won a lottery ticket and had a million dollars, what would you do with it?

Travel, to find inspiration and emotion and a massive studio to put all the inspiration and emotion together. If I had one million dollars, I’d take my time, I’d take more time to do everything.

What made you fall in love with dance music?

Loneliness. I dived into music at a moment in my life where I felt the most alone.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

Honestly, I don’t know. My music grew up with me. I try to put a good groove in my music, use real instruments and make people dance.

If you could bring one musician back from the dead, who would it be?

Unfortunately, death creates legends for the next generation. I wouldn’t bring anyone back. Death is part of life and I feel you appreciate their artistry more that way.

Have you got a secret talent?

I don’t think so. It might be so secret even I don’t know about!

DJing or Producing?

Producing. Djing and producing are connected; to be a complete artist nowadays you have to do both. I feel much more comfortable in the studio than in the club scene even if I love it.

Who would be your dream collaboration?

In terms of House music, would be Axwell, in terms of general music: Hans Zimmer.

I wouldn’t want to collaborate but more to see how they work. They are both geniuses.

What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?

Hans Zimmer in Paris 2 or 3 years ago.

If you could instantly know how to play one instrument, what would it be?

 Piano

What do you get up to outside of making music?

 Entrepreneur.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Where I want to be.
